At ADHDAlberta, we believe that every individual has the potential to lead a fulfilling and meaningful life. We strive to empower our clients to overcome challenges and achieve their goals through a collaborative and strengths-based approach.
We offer a range of services for ADULTS with ADHD or suspected ADHD including diagnosis, letters to your doctor confirming your diagnosis, evidence based counselling for your ADHD, individual therapy and couples therapy.
Your therapist has over 30 years of experience with ADHD and is a Certified ADHD Professional (ADHD-CCSP) and a Registered Provisional Psychologist, with expertise in a variety of areas, including anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship issues. We are committed to staying up-to-date with the latest research and techniques in the field of ADHD.
Our strengths based counselling sessions assist you in channeling and managing your ADHD energy so that you can realize the superpowers that come along with this diagnosis.
Learning how to manage stress is critical to thriving with ADHD. We teach clients practical skills and strategies to manage stress more effectively. We help clients identify the sources of their stress and develop coping mechanisms to reduce its impact on their daily lives.
Having undiagnosed and unmanaged ADHD can be depressing. These sessions are designed to help clients overcome depression and improve their mental health and well-being. We use evidence-based treatments, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), to help clients address their symptoms and develop long-term coping skills.
Having ADHD can be hard on your self-esteem and confidence. Sessions help clients build a positive self-image and develop greater confidence in themselves and their abilities. We help clients identify negative self-talk and belief patterns and replace them with more positive and empowering ones.
Some ADHD behaviours can negatively effect your mind-body wellness. These sessions help clients cultivate greater awareness of the mind-body connection and develop practices to support their overall health and well-being. We discuss a range of mind-body techniques that can help clients reduce stress, improve sleep, and enhance their overall quality of life.
ADD (attention-deficit disorder) is an outdated term for what is now called ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder). ADHD now applies to all types of ADHD.
1) Hyperactive/Impulsive Type
Symptoms of hyperactivity-impulsivity but not inattention.
2) Inattentive Type
Symptoms of inattention, but not hyperactivity-impulsivity (previously called ADD – Attention Deficit Disorder).
3) Combination Type
Symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity.
Someone can have any type of ADHD regardless of gender. However, boys and men tend to display more hyperactive and impulsive behaviour while girls and women are more likely to have inattentive ADHD. But it’s not just about whether someone has hyperactive or inattentive symptoms, there are some symptomatic and behavioural differences that often seem to be determined by gender.
Female ADHD tends to look like: impatience, rushing, clumsiness, struggle with short-term memory, struggle to maintain a schedule and be on time, prone to body-focused repetitive behaviours like, skin picking, nail biting, cuticle picking, loss of focus/daydreaming, hypersexuality, feelings of constant overwhelm, feelings of inadequacy, chronic fatigue, burn out, chronic anxiety and depression, perfectionism, insomnia, disturbed sleep, lucid dreams, exaggerated PMS and menopausal symptoms.
Male ADHD can present with very similar inattentive ADHD symptoms to women but both men and boys with ADHD are more likely to display behaviours such as: hyperactivity, disruptive behaviour, frequently losing things, interrupting others who are speaking, aggressive and defensive behaviours, high-risk behaviors (e.g., substance misuse, speeding, unhealthy sexual behaviours, excessive spending), angry outbursts, insensitivity to others.
Not everyone needs or wants to be on medication for their ADHD. Though, there are many great medications that can be life changing for some people, they are not for everyone. The good news is that there are Non-pharmaceutical interventions available to those who wish to try a different path.
According to CADDRA, the Canadian ADHD Resource Alliance, ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders in Canada, affecting 4-6% of adults and 5-7% of children, or approximately 1.8 million Canadians. There is no shame in being neurodivergent, it just means that your brain works differently. Once you find out how to work with your brain, great things can happen.
In-person and Zoom sessions are available in Calgary, AB. Zoom sessions are available to clients in the rest of Alberta and New Brunswick.
